Methodology

How we got to the average.

The figure on our homepage is the mid-range monthly cost of outsourcing the eight professional disciplines Greymill's sixteen specialists cover, for a small business with 5–25 employees. Below is the full breakdown, with regional benchmarks for the UK, US and Europe.

Accountant & bookkeeper£600 – £1,500
Solicitor / legal counsel£800 – £3,500
HR consultant£500 – £2,000
Marketing agency / strategist£2,000 – £6,000
Business / executive coach£600 – £2,500
Fractional CFO / FD£1,500 – £4,000
Compliance / data protection£300 – £1,200
Tax advisor£500 – £1,500
Mid-range total£11,345/mo

What's in the figure

The total reflects mid-point pricing across the eight disciplines a typical small business actually buys from outside professionals. We took the middle of each range, not the high end. The real number for any specific business will vary based on which services they currently use and at what rate.

For example: a five-person consultancy with no in-house accountant, no marketing agency, and a £1,200/month fractional CFO might only be spending £1,200/month today. A twenty-five person engineering firm with an outsourced HR consultant, an agency on retainer, a tax advisor, and a fractional FD could easily be spending £15,000+.

What it does not include

The figure is for outsourced professional services only. It does not include in-house staff salaries, software subscriptions, office costs, or one-off project fees. Most small businesses use a mix of in-house and outsourced — Greymill compares to the outsourced portion.

Why ranges, not single numbers

Professional fees vary by city, sector, complexity and reputation. A London commercial solicitor charges differently to one in Newcastle. A SaaS company needs different compliance support than a hospitality business. The ranges above are typical mid-market quotes; bespoke or specialist work falls outside them.

How Greymill compares

Greymill replaces the cross-disciplinary work small business owners typically can't justify hiring eight different professionals for. It does not replace your regulated tax filings, courtroom legal representation, or signed audit work. For those, you still keep an accountant and a solicitor. Greymill handles the 80% of cross-functional questions and drafts that don't need a regulated professional.
