What electrical license do I need, and does it vary by state?
Yes, it varies by state and often by city, and the license holder of record answers for the permits and the work.
In Texas, TDLR licenses apprentices, journeymen and masters, and an electrical contractor license is held through a master (Tex. Occ. Code ch. 1305). California's CSLB licenses the business as a C-10 through a qualifier, electricians working for C-10 contractors must be state-certified (Cal. Lab. Code sec. 108.2), and the contractor's bond is $25,000 (As of Oct 2026). Florida licenses electrical contractors under part II of chapter 489, and unlicensed contracting is a crime that costs you the right to enforce the contract or a lien (Fla. Stat. secs. 489.127(2), 489.128 and 713.02(7)). New York has no statewide license; New York City licenses Master Electricians. See the Academy lesson on licenses and permits.
Which NEC edition applies where I work?
Whichever edition your state or city has adopted, with its local amendments, so ask the permit office before you design the job.
California's 2025 Electrical Code, based on the 2023 NEC, took effect January 1, 2026. Texas made the 2026 NEC its state electrical code from September 1, 2026, with a limited GFCI exception for certain outdoor outlets (16 Tex. Admin. Code sec. 73.100). Florida's 8th edition building code uses the 2020 NEC until its 9th edition, based on the 2023 NEC, takes effect on December 31, 2026, and New York City runs its own Electrical Code (As of Oct 2026). For work permitted before a change, ask which edition covers it.
Who pulls the permit, and what gets inspected?
The license holder pulls any required permit before work starts, and the inspector signs the final. Never pull a permit for work someone else did: the permit holder answers for it.
New circuits and EV chargers usually need a permit, so ask the permit office. Size a service upgrade with an NEC load calculation (Article 220) before telling a customer that a heat pump water heater, EV charger or induction range needs a 200 A service; many do not. EV chargers follow NEC Article 625, and solar and batteries Articles 690, 705 and 706, with the utility's interconnection approval before the system operates (As of Oct 2026).
How should I price service calls and flat-rate jobs?
Build your hourly rate from the hours your techs actually sell, then price each task from it. Drive time, supply house runs and callbacks are paid but never sold.
Break-even is the burdened wage divided by efficiency, plus overhead per billable hour. In an indicative example, six techs at $32 an hour with a 30% burden, 2,080 paid hours each, 60% efficiency and $780,000 of overhead break even at $173.50, so a 20% net margin needs about $217 an hour. State the trip charge before dispatch, and show three priced options. See the Academy lesson on flat-rate pricing and how to price a quote.
How much can I take up front on a home job?
It depends on the state, and home sales of $25 or more usually carry 3 business days to cancel under the FTC Cooling-Off Rule (16 C.F.R. part 429) (As of Oct 2026).
In California the down payment may not exceed $1,000 or 10% of the price, whichever is less, and buyers aged 65 or older get 5 business days to cancel (Cal. Bus. and Prof. Code sec. 7159.5; Cal. Civ. Code sec. 1689.6) (As of Oct 2026). A panel upgrade sold on a repair visit you were called out for keeps the cancellation right (sec. 429.0(a)(5)), so give the notice.
What are my lien rights if a customer does not pay?
Lien rights are statutory and strictly read: a missed notice or a late filing usually loses the lien, whatever the merits.
In Florida, record a claim of lien within 90 days of final furnishing (Fla. Stat. sec. 713.08(5)). In New York, file a notice of lien within 8 months after completion, or 4 months for a single-family dwelling (N.Y. Lien Law sec. 10). In Texas, on contracts entered from January 1, 2022, an original contractor on residential work files the lien affidavit by the 15th day of the third month after the month its work was completed (Tex. Prop. Code sec. 53.052). Small claims limits are $20,000 in a Texas justice court and $8,000 in Florida (As of Oct 2026). See how to chase an unpaid invoice and the Academy lesson on contracts.
What payment rules apply when I sub to a GC?
State prompt payment laws set how fast money flows down, and whether pay-if-paid binds depends on the state.
In Texas, a contractor pays its sub within 7 days of receiving the owner's payment, with interest at 1.5% a month on late sums (Tex. Prop. Code secs. 28.002 and 28.004); in California a prime pays subs within 7 days of each progress payment unless agreed otherwise in writing, or owes a 2% a month penalty (Cal. Bus. and Prof. Code sec. 7108.5) (As of Oct 2026). In Florida, pay-if-paid binds only if it states the risk shift clearly (DEC Elec., Inc. v. Raphael Constr. Corp., 558 So. 2d 427 (Fla. 1990)).
What do I owe on workers' comp and overtime?
Classify payroll correctly for workers' comp, for example NCCI code 5190 for electrical wiring inside buildings, and remember that flat-rate pay does not switch off overtime.
Non-exempt techs get time and a half over 40 hours a week, with commission in the regular rate (Fair Labor Standards Act). Texas lets private employers opt out of workers' comp at the cost of their common-law defenses, and Florida requires it for a construction employer with 1 or more employees (Fla. Stat. sec. 440.02(20)(b)2.) (As of Oct 2026). A sub doing electrical work usually needs its own license. See the Academy lesson on pay and helpers.
